IF COLFAX HAD BEEN IN THE BOX WITH LINCOLN THAT NIGHT, TWO PERSONS IN LINE TO SUCCEED LINCOLN WOULD HAVE BEEN IN DANGER.-- Vice President Andrew Johnson was also a target that night, but his assailant lost his nerve and didn't attack him. Colfax was next in line for the Presidency after the vice president. The next one after him was President Pro Tempore Lafayette Sabine Foster. Back in 1865, Secretary of State William Seward would not have been in line of succession.
