10. PETERSBURG AND APPOMATTOX, VIRGINIA-- Long siege and Robert E. Lee's surrender. DON'T MISS: Poplar Forest, President Thomas Jefferson's place to escape crowds visiting his Montecello after his presidency.

11. CHICKAMAUGA, GEORGIA AND CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE--DON'T MISS: LAMAR'S for cocktails, fried chicken, old-school R&B, Christmas lights and velvet wall paper.

12. ANDERSONVILLE, GEORGIA-- 13,000 died there in just 14 months. DON'T MISS: President Jimmy Carter and peanuts in nearby Plains, Georgia.

5.  MONOCACY NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD--  Frederick.  Union forces under Gen. Lew Wallace delayed the Confederate march on Washington, DC, in 1864.

6.  NATIONAL MUSEUM OF CIVIL WAR MEDICINES--  Frederick.

7.  POINT LOOKOUT STATE PARK--  Where the Potomac Rivers enters the Chesapeake Bay.  Confederate prison camp.

8.  SOUTH MOUNTAIN STATE BATTLEFIELD--  Middleton.  The clash of armies before Antietam.

9.  SURRATT HOUSE MUSEUM--  Clinton.  Former inn where John Wilkes Booth and others plotted killing Lincoln and other members of the government.
