Adele Cutts Douglas-- Part 1: Related to Dolley Madison

From House House Divided site.

As I was writing about this woman in my last post, I couldn't help but think she might have been considerably younger than Stephen Douglas.

Rose Adele Cutts was a famous Washington beauty (also, I have to think that Douglas wasn't particularly handsome) and valuable second wife to Stephen Douglas.  She was born in Washington, D.C., on December 27, 1835.  She was the daughter of James Madison Cutts, nephew of former first lady Dolley Madison, and Eleanora  O'Neale, from a prominent Maryland Catholic family.

Tall with chestnut hair and a universally proclaimed beauty. Addie (as she was called)  grew up under tutelage of her great aunt, Dolley Madison, and could not help but become a poised and popular figure with a political mind.

Then, her husband-to-be , Stephen A. Douglas stood 5 feet 4 inches and could be described as being somewhat pudgy.

So, how did this match come to be?  Was she a "Trophy Wife?"

Sure Was Nice to Get Together With Civil War Folk Again-- Part 4: Stephen Douglas' Connection to Rose O'Neal Greenhow

Stephen Douglas' first wife, Martha,  died in 1853.  In 1856, he remarried, this time to 20-year-old Adele Cutts who was 23 years younger than him.  She was a Southern woman from Washington, D.C. and daughter of James Madison Cutts, a nephew of former president James Madison. and Ellen O'Neal, , a nice of Rose O'Neil Greenhow, who went on to fame during the Civil War.

Adele had been raised as a Catholic and with Stephen's permission, had his two sons from his first marriage baptized Catholic and raised in that faith.

The SCV Sees the Flag Attack As a "Nightmare"-- Part 2

Commander Barrow continued:  "They want to remove our flags, the names of our streets, our monuments.  We're in a country that's supposed to be tolerant, and suddenly they're targeting our culture.  I can't wait to wake up from this nightmare."

These comments came after a ceremony at Richmond's Hollywood Cemetery to honor the Pennsylvania doctor who in the 1870s exhumed the remains of thousands of Confederate soldiers killed at the Battle of Gettysburg and had their remains shipped back.  (Sure sounds like something a racist group would do.)

About 18,000 Confederate soldiers are buried at Hollywood Cemetery, many in an area referred to as Gettysburg Hill thanks to the doctor's efforts. Small Confederate flags were fluttering amongst the tombstones.

Jefferson Davis along with U.S. presidents John Tyler and James Monroe are also buried there.
