But the symbolism of an adolescent soldier became all the more polarizing after documents in the university's archives revealed the white supremacist language used at its 1913 dedication, including a gleeful account of the whipping of a young black woman.

Some members of this very liberal community (Chapel Hill, N.C. and UNC) now envision another, more painful battle if the UNC's governing body, whose members were chosen by the state's Republican-held General Assembly, decrees that the statue should be reinstalled.

The North Carolina  statewide Board of Governors met Tuesday and set a November 15 deadline for UNC-Chapel Hill's chancellor and Board of Trustees to present a plan to preserve the sculpture which has been hauled away to a secret location.

The chancellor, Carol Folt was against the way the statue was pulled down, but is leaving options open, including a "location on campus to display the monument in a place of prominence, honor, visibility, availability and access, where we can ensure the monument's preservation and place in the history of UNC and the nation."

UNC and 'Silent Sam'-- Part 3: Faced Defiantly North

Some visitors to where the statue was continue to lament the sacrifices made by the young men who gave up their studies here to fight and die for a cause they believed in.

"Their bodies are who knows where.  What do they have?"  said Sandra Aldridge, who spat in disgust as she circled the railings after coming to campus for an appointment.  "If you don't like something, you don't just tear it down."

Decades of debate about the statue and its prominence on the campus have escalated into a politicized public drama, one heightened by the similarities to the controversy in Charlottesville a year ago.

Silent Sam has long been a flash point, facing defiantly north, overseeing a main entryway to UNC's historic campus.

UNC and 'Silent Sam'-- Part 2: 'Died On the Field Of Honor'

UNC Chancellor Carol Folt is hoping that people will be able to see that there is a difference between people who see the statue as a memorial to fallen ancestors and those who push white supremacy.

The pedestal from which "Silent Sam" stood for over a century is empty and surrounded by metal crowd control fences.  You can see where it fell headfirst to the ground and crashed through the barrier.

For awhile, a bouquet of flowers sat inside the barriers with a card inscribed to "James J. Cherry," one of the Confederate Roanoke Minute Men and a member of the University of North Carolina Class of 1862 who "died on the field of honor."  This is what a Confederate statue means to me.

CONFEDERATE STATUE COULD BE RESTORED ELSEWHERE AT SCHOOL

Two weeks ago a group of protesters (actually thugs guilty of a horrendous hate crime) illegally desecrated the statue of a Confederate soldier at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.  You can probably guess where I stand on this.

Now, there is uncertainty about what to do with the statue.

Many argue that it is a relic of racism and want it gone forever, school officials are thinking about putting it up again, but somewhere less prominent.

This from UNC Chancellor Carol Folt who thinks it doesn't belong at the school's "front door", where it was originally, but that the statue means different things to different people.  Many see it as a memorial to fallen Confederate soldiers, some of them ancestors, and that it "has a place in our history and on our campus where its history could be taught."

She seems to have changed her tune since the incident.  At first she seemed to be on the side of the desecrators.  Now, not so much.

The Shame of UNC- Chapel Hill: The Desecration of "Silent Sam"

What occurred last night on the campus of the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill was nothing less than a hate crime, and, as at Durham and Duke University after Charlottesville, police stood by and did nothing to stop the desecration of a piece of history.

The statue of "Silent Sam", as he has been called for decades, had stood for over 100 years, dedicated in 1913 to the memory of UNC students who gave their lives for the Confederacy and all those who fought for it.  That is school history.

Those students and non-student agitators should be expelled from the school for destruction of property and arrested and brought to trial for hate crimes.   But, I am sure, like at Durham, nothing will be done.  And, in these days of smart phones, I am sure there is plenty of evidence of those who are guilty of it.

Civil War II-- 616: So You Think The New War Is Over

It was brought up at panel discussion this past Tuesday at the McHenry County Civil War Round Table meeting in Woodstock, Illinois, that some of the members thought these anti-all-things-Confederate attacks were somewhat over because they weren't seeing much about it in the newspapers or on TV.

I told them the attacks weren't over.  Thank goodness, we have had no more Charlottesvilles, but, believe me, the attacks are in no way over.

And the New War Continues-- Part 3: A History and a Hateful Mayor

Starting in April 1862, more than 1,000 captured Confederate soldiers were moved to Camp Randall, a Union training camp located where Camp Randall Stadium, home of the University of Wisconsin Badgers is located today.  Over the following days, 139 of the Confederates died.

According to the good mayor, in 1931 the UDC, "a racist and bigoted organization" installed the monument with names of them, honoring "treasonous rebels' as part of a national strategy of propaganda and determination to rewrite history providing a favorable interpretation of the Civil War."

"The larger monument at Madison's Forest Hill Cemetery is not a Civil War monument," he said.  "It was installed over 60 years after the end of the war.  It is a slab of propaganda paid for by a racist organization on public property when our city was inattentive to both the new form of slavery propagated by the donors with the Black Codes and to the meaning of that despicable fixture honoring slavery, sedition and oppression."

According to the good mayor, all those UDC  (United Daughters of the Confederacy) ladies must be card-carrying members of the KKK.

I sure would like to know where Mr. Soglin gets these ideas.  Sounds more of a person jumping on the bandwagon with all this Confederate hatred stuff.

And, the New War Continues-- Part 1: Madison, Wis. About to Embarrass Self

That new war is one being waged to completely wipe out everything having to do with the Confederacy and damage a people's heritage.

Though I have not been writing much about it, the current attempt to erase all aspects of the Confederacy from history continues.  I don't get as involved because it makes me so angry.

But, I see that in Madison, Wisconsin, a group will be making a decision of a Confederate monument in a city cemetery soon.  This story goes back to last summer.

From the August 22, 2017, Madison State Journal  "Mayor Paul Soglin calls Confederate memorials historical 'lies'" by Paul Mosiman.

He says the memorial placed at the Confederate Rest section of Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison a
"historical lie" placed there by a racist organization around 1931 to promote a new form of racism, rather than a monument of the Civil War.  What he refers to as a racist organization is the United Daughters of the Confederacy.  It is made up of female descendants of Confederates.  (Kind of like calling the DAR racist.)

Last week, he ordered the removal of a plaque placed by the memorial in 1981.

The memorial is there to mark the 139 Confederate prisoners who died at Camp Randall (present day Camp Randall Stadium) in Madison.

Hate Crime On the Grave of Andrew Jackson

I was shocked to find out that those radicals on the far left have struck again.  This time they desecrated the grave of President Andrew Jackson in Nashville.  Obscenities, anarchist symbols and the work "Killer" was written on his grave and other things were directed at the grave of his wife Rachel.

This is a carry over from the horrible things they are doing to Confederate monuments.

At least the media is not referring to it as vandalizing, but they are not calling it a hate crime, which it is.

And, he wasn't EVEN in the Civil War fighting for the Confederacy.

Confederate Haters every bit as bad as white supremacists.

Black Group Disrupts Confederate Memorial Service in Chicago-- Part 1

A Sons of Confederate Veterans memorial service at a mass grave of thousands of Confederate soldiers who died in a Chicago prison during the war was disrupted Saturday when 50 mostly-black protesters showed up to mark the nearby grave of Civil Rights activist and journalist Ida B. Wells. They used loudspeakers to drown out the Confederate service claiming that the service just was more white supremacists.

The SCV Camp Douglas (Camp 516) group, so named for the Chicago prison (sometimes called the North's Andersonville) in which anywhere between 4,500 and 6,000 Confederates died under unbelievably harsh conditions, has held memorial observations at the site for almost twenty years and the other group had never shown up in that time.

Seems like quite a coincidence, especially since neither Ida B. Wells' birth or death were on April 22.    Someone was just wanting to provoke a confrontation.

**  UNC profs threaten to destroy Confederate monument unless its is taken down.  They want to stay anonymous but don't fear getting arrested for doing it.  These were described as senior professors.  Sure setting a terrible example.    I'd sure fire them if they went through with the threat and definitely do something about making such an absurd threat.

Just in case you think all the Confederate-haters have taken a break from their desecrations.  They haven't.
