Poor Hampton, Virginia: Sacked and Burned Three Times, Then....

First, the town, by the Chesapaeke Bay, was sacked by the British in 1813, during the War of 1812. And, then, it was burned twice during the Civil War.

As if that were not enough, ion April 9, 1884, much of the downtown was destroyed in a fire.

A fire company was then organized with most of the prominent members having served in the Confederate military or Union Army, stationed at nearby Fortress Monroe.
